If you're a business owner, accountant, or Tally user in India, you probably know how important it is to get your GST (Goods and Services Tax) calculations right. Tally Prime, one of the most widely used accounting software tools, makes GST accounting efficient—but only if it’s set up correctly.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through the steps to calculate GST in Tally Prime, from enabling GST features to generating GST reports.

What is Tally Prime?

Tally Prime is the latest version of Tally's accounting software, designed to simplify day-to-day business operations such as billing, inventory management, payroll, and, most importantly, GST compliance.

Step 1: Enable GST in Tally Prime

Before you can calculate GST, you need to activate it in your company settings.

Steps:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally > F11: Features > F3: Statutory & Taxation.
  2. Set Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST) to Yes.
  3. Set up GST details like state, registration type, GSTIN, and applicable tax rates.
  4. Save the configuration.

Step 2: Create Ledgers for GST

You’ll need ledgers for:

  1. Input CGST, SGST, IGST
  2. Output CGST, SGST, IGST

Steps:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally > Accounts Info > Ledgers > Create.
  2. Under Duties & Taxes, create GST ledgers for each tax type.
  3. Set the type of duty/tax (e.g., GST), and select the appropriate tax (CGST, SGST, IGST).

Step 3: Create GST-Compliant Items and Stock Groups

Assign GST rates to items so Tally can auto-calculate the taxes.

Steps:

  1. Go to Inventory Info > Stock Item > Create.
  2. Enter the GST rate under the Tax Rate section.
  3. Make sure to assign the correct HSN/SAC Code.

Step 4: Record a GST Sale or Purchase Invoice

Tally Prime automatically calculates GST when you create a GST-compliant invoice.

For a Sale:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally > Vouchers > F8: Sales.
  2. Select the customer, items, and tax ledgers.
  3. Tally will auto-calculate GST based on the location and rates set.

For a Purchase:

Follow the same steps under F9: Purchase, selecting the vendor and items purchased.

Step 5: View GST Reports in Tally Prime

To view and file GST returns:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally > Display More Reports > Statutory Reports > GST.
  2. Access GSTR-1, GSTR-2, GSTR-3B, and other return formats.
  3. Export or reconcile data with your GST portal.

Tips for Accurate GST Calculation:

  1. Always keep HSN/SAC codes updated.
  2. Double-check tax rates and location (interstate vs intrastate).
  3. Regularly back up your data.
  4. Update Tally Prime regularly to comply with GST law changes.

Final Thoughts

Tally Prime makes GST calculation and compliance seamless—but only if you configure it correctly. From enabling GST features to generating accurate reports, every step matters.
